Domestique and Exiternal are companion pieces: digital narratives that use the metaphor of ‘book’ to address the concept of placement. Where am I? Containment, interior space, exterior condition, navigation, literary terminology, found objects, domesticity, negotiated relationships, responsibility and societal concerns are avenues of interpretation.

(enable pop-up windows to watch!)

The Flash pieces work as small cinematic poems, and as a table of contents to individual image files that are linked through user interaction. All the interior (domestique) images were shot in my home; the blank page spread in every photo alludes to how we write the stories of our lives through our daily toil. The exterior (exiternal) pictures were all shot in my yard (and in the alley behind the house), and all from natural and man-made found objects. These objects occupy the same pages, but now sit on, or in, the folded paper.

The soundtrack is simply the text-to-speech feature found in the Macintosh operating system. The 'poem' was entered as text, phonemes adjusted and stressed, voices chosen to read it orally, and then some final sound editing prior to input into Flash.
